Club Adopts a New Project At the urging of Lion Adam Young, the Club has agreed to adopt a ½ mile section of Salt Creek near CVS in Nashville. Lion Adam says that we would traverse the “navigable” waterway to pick up trash and debris both east and west of the SR 46 bridge twice a year, beginning late this fall when the vegetation dies back. Lion Adam will be chairing the project. Lion Dave Miller pointed out that we’re already monitoring the creek with Hoosier Riverwatch at Deer Run Park, just downstream of the adopted area. Lion Dave says the next Riverwatch data collection date is September 23, at 4 p.m. at Deer Run Park. Look for clean up dates, pull on your waders and enjoy keeping Brown County beautiful!
DG recognizes contributions of BC Lions Lion District Governor Gary Lawson opened his remarks to the Brown County Lions at our August club meeting by recognizing the district officers and directors who call Brown County home.
We should be very proud of these individuals who have committed to lead in our larger Lions community.
Committee to study honorary member status Lion John McKune has been appointed to head up a group to study the possibility of granting honorary status to some of our members. Our by-laws, which were written by LCI and adopted by the Club when it was chartered, provide for Active, Affiliate, Associate, Honorary, Life, Member-at-Large and Privileged membership categories. For information about the differences between categories, go to www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/pdfs/la2.pdf.
Outhouse Racers and Plunger Tossers Outhouses will race and plungers will fly at the Abe Martin Picnic on September 15 on the Village Green in Nashville. Our club is participating this year, after accepting a challenge from the Rotary Club. Lions Adam Young and Jim Oliver will pitch plungers at 1 pm, while Lion Dave Miller will pilot the privy at 3 pm Saturday. Lunch is offered by the We Care Gang beginning at noon. Lions Margie McClain and Donna Lutes are leading the Lion entry. Lions Allen Hazelbaker, Sam Hilker, Bob Boger, Gerhard Weber, Gary Davidson and Darrel Kramer are in the process of building our outhouse on wheels. This is the Lions’ first time to participate in the picnic, so make sure you come out to support your local Lions!
Plaza at the Playhouse The final play of the year at the Brown County Playhouse, “Plaza Suite,” begins its run at the end of September, reports Lion Chairman Gloria Berryman. Lion Del Crocker, who captains the show, reports he has a few openings yet in his schedule. Lion Gloria reported that revenue is down on the year because the shows that were picked for the season were not very popular. “The Glass Menagerie” (a Tennessee Williams show) was down almost 50% from the third show last year. She jokingly suggested that she may demand to decide what shows will be scheduled for next year to ensure maximum profits for the Lions! Special thanks to Charlie Placke for getting the popcorn maker back in service—good as new!
Circus Still Juggling Date Lion Jerry Simo reported that Lion preparations for the Kelly Miller Circus next spring are well in hand, but that the circus has not yet promised us our chosen date of May 2, 2008. Chairpersons are in place, the venue has been reserved and police services are committed. Now, Lion Jerry says, it’s just a matter of waiting for the circus to plan their travel routes.
President’s Column: Proud to be a Brown County Lion While at dinner with friends last night, our hostess commented on how great the Lions’ fireworks were this year. “Better than any I’ve ever seen,” she pronounced. This isn’t the first person who has mentioned to me the contributions our club makes to our community. The money we give to support students and to organizations who are serving needs in Brown County and around the world is so appreciated by those who benefit. Our commitment to events that build a community, like the Spring Blossom Parade, Independence Day fireworks and helping the fair board with parking, ensures that great traditions continue. Recently, our efforts to improve our environment through Adopt-a-Highway, Pride² ABC, Hoosier Riverwatch and Adopt-a-River will pay dividends to our children’s children. I’m just so proud to be a Lion, because I believe service is one of the most important things we do in life. I hope you’re proud of what we do, too. I hope that pride spills out in your daily life and others see you living the motto, “We Serve.” Our club will grow and adopt new projects to further improve our hometown. And your Lion President gets to accept accolades from appreciative neighbors. --Lion President Jim |
