Fruit Sale Save your paper grocery sacks for the Fruit Sale, says Lion Earl Eversol, chair of the annual citrus sale. Pre-sale orders are being taken. If you haven’t been called, call Lion Earl with your order ASAP. If you were a caller and haven’t turned in your orders, get them to Earl even quicker. Delivery will be December 10-12 at the Fairgrounds. Lion Earl still has two shifts that need volunteers: Dec 11 and 12, each from noon to 3:00.
November dinner meeting to feature veterans Lion First Vice-President Gerhard Weber announced that, in line with Veteran’s Day observance, our November program will be “Military Funeral Honors.” The speaker will be Richard Karkowski with the assistance of Sergeant Jeffrey Hawley and Nate Schauwecker. Special guests will be Brown County Veterans Service Coordinator Ron Higgins and Brown County Honor Guard Commander Rick White.
Playhouse profits down, but second chance on the way Lion Playhouse Chairman Jerry Simo reported that 2009 revenues topped the 2008 gross sales figure by $165. He reported that expenses were also up (more than $165) due to unexpected occurrences like the boil water order caused by the Opry fire which forced the Playhouse to serve sodas from two-liter bottles instead of the soda fountain. Lion Jerry has announced that, in the wake of the Opry fire, part of the Opry shows will be held at the Playhouse, permitting us a chance to make up some of the downturn in profits. The Little Nashville Express Band (the Opry Friday night show) will be performing at the Brown County Playhouse the following dates, and we need concession workers. The show begins at 8:00 PM every night except Dec. 31st when it is 9:00 PM. There will be an intermission during the performance, and we only need to clean the concession area as we do for the regular season. A minimum of three workers are needed at each show. § Friday Nov. 13 - all filled with workers § Friday Nov. 20 - open § Thurs. Nov. 26 - open Thanksgiving § Friday Nov. 27- open § Friday Dec. 4 - open § Friday Dec. 11 - open § Friday Dec. 18 - open § Thurs. Dec. 31 - open 9 :00 PM - Midnight The doors open 1/2 hour before each show for sales. Plan at being in the concession 1 hour before each show. Sign up at the dinner meeting or send Lion Jerry an email with your selected dates on a first come basis.
Dining Out sales continue Lion Larry Weir reported that there are still 484 Dining Out cards to be sold. Many are on consignment and others are in the hands of merchants for sale. Lion Larry reminds everyone that the cards are good most of next year, and will more than pay for themselves in just two or three uses. Buy one for yourself and sell one to your friend (assuming you have a friend)!
Chairpersons needed for two programs The Adopt a River program, which cleans the banks of Salt Creek near the State Road 46 bridge next to CVS, is in desperate need of a chairman to lead two clean-ups annually. If no one wants to lead the program, we’ll abandon our agreement with the DNR, and our road sign will come down. The Fourth of July (actually third this year) Fireworks needs an overall chairman to coordinate the activities that make up the World’s Greatest Small-Town Fireworks Display.
By the Numbers 102—glasses collected in October for recycling 5—cell phones collected to benefit domestic violence shelters 1—hearing aid collected for recycling 2,200—hours donated by the ABC Pride2 toward keeping Nashville beautiful $800—approximate profit from the Pancake Breakfast last month
Highway cleanup project continues Lion Gerhard Weber has assumed duties as Highway Cleanup chairman, and will be planning future clean up dates. Contact Lion Gerhard for more information or to offer help when he schedules the next date.
Orientation program for new Lions in the works The Lion Membership Committee is planning a new-member orientation program for our newest members. Contact Lion Gene Neidnagel if you have interest in helping or having your project presented to new members.
Democrat calendar deadline coming up The Brown County Democrat publishes a calendar every December, and we need to get our event dates printed in the calendar. If you are a chairman of an event, please set your date in stone in November and get that date to Lion Larry Weir or Lion President Bob by December 1 so we can take advantage of this free publicity.
Grant applications coming up Lion Finance Chair Dave Miller points out that it is almost time for local organizations and individuals to apply for our charitable grants. This year’s deadline is set for January 25, 2010. Application forms will be available on the website beginning about December 1.
From the Desk of Lion President Bob Gilmore November 11 is Veterans Day, we are going to acknowledge all of our Veterans at the November dinner meeting. Please plan on attending so we can thank them. Congratulations to Lions Julia Voland and Lion Gerhard Weber on a successful pancake breakfast. I send a special thank you to all who worked on this project. Lion Earl Eversol and Lion Vickie Gilmore and their committee are hard at work calling to obtain orders for our fruit sale project. Check with your neighbors, friends, relatives to be sure we don't miss anyone who wants fruit. |
