The highest honor a Lion can receive is the recognition by one's peers for exemplary
service. This honor is named after our organization's founder, Melvin Jones.

Accepting their awards as Melvin Jones Fellows are Brown
County Lions Club President Ray Laffin and his wife, Judy,
at left, and Lion Secretary Bob Nixon and his wife Nancy.

Lions Club Officers Honored as Melvin Jones Fellows
Two officers of the Brown County Lions Club have been cited
as Melvin Jones Fellows, the highest honor of Lions Clubs
International. The award represents recognition by one's
peers for exemplary service. The fellowship is named to
commemorate the life of service by the Lions Clubs founder,
Melvin Jones.
Bob Nixon, a Lion since 1994 and president in 1997-98, and
Ray Laffin, a Lion since 1997 and newly elected as
president, were honored in June as the Brown County Lions
Club inducted officers for 2002-03.
The award reflects the service and dedication both have
given to the community and to the local Lions Club, which
is now the fourth largest in Indiana with 104 members.
Lion Bob Nixon was elected and inducted as the local club's
secretary for a second year. He also was a director and
third vice president in 1995, second vice president in 1996,
and president in 1997-98. He has been active in Lions Club
activities statewide. Nixon and his wife, Nancy, reside at
Woodland Lake. In the community, he also has been treasurer
of the Bean Blossom Boosters and active in the Historical
Society and St. David's Episcopal Church.
Lion Ray Laffin, who also served recently as co-chair of the
Indiana Lions Club State Convention at Bloomington, was the
local club's secretary three years in addition to serving in
vice presidential roles. He was a co-founder of the current
Brown County Lions Breakfasts, and last year was co-chair
for the club's annual Citrus Sale. Laffin and his wife,
Judyth, live on Lick Creek Road. Both are active in the
Brown County Community Band that Laffin directs. Laffin also
was president last year of the Brown County Historical
Society. He also is active at St. David's church.
TWO NAMED IN 2001
AS MELVIN JONES FELLOWS
Lion President Perry Olds, left, presents Melvin Jones Fellowship
Awards for 2001 to two veteran members of the Brown County Lions
Club: Lion Joe DeWees, center, a member of the club since 1959, and
Lion Stu Huffman, a member since to 1971. DeWees is retired Nashville
postmaster and Huffman is employed at the Indiana Department of
Education.

The award is named in honor of the founder of Lions International and
recognizes dedication and years of volunteer Lions Club service.
We honor and acknowledge the men and women who, through their dedication are listed
herein:
