Newsletter a week late, power outage blamed Your Lion newsletter is a week late this month because the board meeting was postponed due to the power outage in Nashville on August 4 and 5. The dinner meeting will take place on its regular date, August 18.
Dining Out cards available for purchase and sale Lion Dining Out Chair Larry Weir reports that his team of Lions Tim O’Bryan and Tona Martin-Nelson have Dining Out cards available for sale to you and by you. This year’s card has 30 stamps, or “value propositions.” Most stamps are good for a full year, and 3 are multi-use stamps. 4-H Fair Booth salespersons unloaded 83 at the fair, topping last year’s record 65 sales. The cards are available for purchase at local banks and from Larry. Members are encouraged to buy at least one, and either buy some to re-sell or take some on consignment. Members are needed to man the sale booth at the IGA, which will be open twice a month through December. The goal is to sell 1,000 books, so members should plan on picking up some cards to re-sell at the August meeting.
August dinner program features DG Richard Halladay Our next dinner meeting will feature our own Lion District Governor Richard Halladay’s address to the club. Don’t miss your DG at his home club!
Pay your dues now, save the club half a buck Lion Secretary Jan Harker reminds all Lions that 2009-2010 dues are now past due. Please make your check out to the Lions Club for $65 ($90 for a couple) and mail to PO Box 716, Nashville. Don’t make her spend half a buck mailing your invoice to you.
Playhouse news Just like actors in a play who have to deal with unexpected circumstances, the Playhouse concession stand had to improvise soda sales due to the water department boil order. Since our soda machine runs on Nashville water, Lion Playhouse Chair Jerry Simo bought 2-liter bottles of soda to keep theater patrons’ thirst controlled. Due to the unexpected extra expense, profits this weekend were down. Two shows remain at the Playhouse this year: Present Laughter and Driving Miss Daisy. Lions Gerhard Weber captains the former and Lion Earl Eversol will fill the schedule for the latter. Sign up at the next dinner meeting to work and see these shows for free. Lion Jerry promises the pop machine will be back up and running.
Finance committee establishes guidelines Lion Finance Chairman Dave Miller recommended to the Board that formal guidelines for allocation of charitable projects proceeds be established to help direct future Lions grants. The Board approved the following provisions: · Annual distributions from Lion funds for scholarships within the Brown County Community Foundation will be reinvested into the fund until such time as the funds can fully fund one scholarship, which may take as much as 20 years. · Utilize 30% of charitable project net proceeds to fund five scholarships, 20% to Lions charitable activities, 20% to Brown County agencies and 30% to Brown County charitable organizations. · Unused scholarship funds will be returned to the charitable project fund to support grants. Lion Dave pointed out that some members feel we need to be adding money to the Foundation to build those scholarship funds. He suggested that the next new fundraising project could be designated to direct its proceeds to growing those endowments.
State Speech and Hearing trustee busy Lion Speech and Hearing Trustee Bill Dougherty reported that the state Lion Speech and Hearing project remains busy. He said that he recently collected 36 hearing aids for recycling and is receiving two requests a week for Lion hearing aid assistance. The Lions provide hearing aids for $200 per ear for adults. Children are served through a different program Lion Bill can refer people to. The Lions also sponsor a summer camp for deaf children in northern Indiana, which served over 200 campers this year.
Fourth plans exploding Plans to expand Independence Day are lighting up, thanks to Lion Jerry Simo. He points out that for about nine years, the Lions have threatened to coordinate a family fun day as part of the fireworks festivities. Lion Jerry has enlisted Hills O’ Brown to sponsor a watermelon seed spitting contest and Rotary to host their kids’ games already. He is working on other sponsors to offer other games and contests, even a classic car show, to encourage more people to gather earlier on the hill to celebrate the 4th of July. Lion Jerry is looking for volunteers to help organize and put on a Family Fun Day. Next year’s 4th of July will be celebrated on Saturday, July 3, 2010.
Pandemic on the horizon A serious threat of a pandemic flu appears on the horizon, but not the Asian bird flu we’ve planned for, reports Lion Dr. Brian Teal. He says he’ll be working with the Brown County Health Department to update our contribution to preparing for and dealing with the threat of widespread “swine flu” infection in our community. Look for more information in the media as the flu season gets closer.
Lion Notes Lion Bill Swigert has been added to the Education (Scholarship) Committee, joining Lions Gene Niednagel and Rich Greeno.
Lion Gary Havely reports that he recycled 82 eyeglasses this month to help those who need glasses in third-world countries.
Lions Gerhard Weber and Terry Woodhouse are going to be organizing the highway cleanup efforts this fall. Look for the date to be set.
The Club agreed to buy a copy of Lions in 21st Century for the Brown County Library. Watch for it on the shelves soon!
The We Care Gang’s Abe Martin Picnic and outhouse race is coming up in September. A driver and pit crew are needed. Please let Lion President Bob know if you want to show your “Nashcar” talents.
A Message from Lion President Bob Gilmore Thanks to all the Brown County Lions who attended Banner Night. Many positive reports have came my way commenting on the turn out and how the meeting was handled. Also, many thanks to Lions Terry and Gloria Berryman for taking care of the appetizers. On August 29, we will host the first District Cabinet meeting at the Historical Society building. More information will be available at our dinner meeting. We will be very busy in the next few months. Please step forward to volunteer on our different projects. --Lion Bob |
