District Governor visits Board of Directors Lion Bill Dougherty was recognized at the April Board meeting by District Governor Gary Ochs with the Certificate of Service from Lions International for his outstanding leadership as district Speech and Hearing Trustee. While at the meeting, DG Ochs conducted a portion of the installation of new member Tona Martin Nelson, recognized “Sir” Jerry Simo for his recruiting new members and encouraged Tona to do the same. In his address to the Board, DG Ochs asked us to “look at where you’ve been and where you’re going.” He challenged us to reconnect with our less active members and to aggressively recruit new members to the Club. He pointed out how one person can make a difference in the world, citing Helen Keller’s challenge to the Lions in 1934 to be champions for the eyesight and hearing impaired. He suggested we consider adding literacy and Peace Poster contest programs or build ramps for folks who can’t get out of their homes.
Coming up….April program ponders pork The April dinner program will feature David Harden, an Avon, Indiana pork producer. The meeting has been deemed a vest night.
District news Although we knew it would happen, Brown County Lion Richard Halladay was formally elected District Governor at the District Convention in April. He will assume his position on July 1. Lion Bill Dougherty won a hotly contested race to retain his position as Speech and Hearing Trustee.
LCT parkers needed Lion Don Stuart reminds us that the Psi Iota Xi Log Cabin Tour will be June 6-7. He pointed out it will feature the same cabins as last year, just minus the flood waters. We’ll need Lions to park cars from 10-1 and 1-4 on each of those days. Please put this on your calendar now and plan on helping out.
Health Dept. plans mock meds distribution Lion Jerry Simo reports the Brown County Health Department needs volunteers for a June 22 medication dispensing exercise. The Health Dept. is going to test their plan for distributing 500 doses in the case of an emergency, and needs volunteers to drive their cars through the dispensary. No drugs will be passed, but there will be food and door prizes for participants. Contact Lion Jerry to volunteer.
Spring Blossom Parade plans blooming Lion President Rick Dean announced that plans for the Spring Blossom Parade are almost complete, though he could use a few more volunteers. The parade requires 54 volunteers to do everything from judge floats to direct traffic. Grand Marshals for the parade, themed Brown County Goes Green, will be representatives from Brown County State Park, Sycamore Land Trust, The Nature Conservancy, Brown County Soil & Water, our District Forester, Brown County Solid Waste and Yellowwood State Park. Eco-friendly light bulbs will be distributed to the crowd at the parade.
Club adopts balanced budget Lion Finance Committee Chair Dave Miller proposed a balanced budget for 2009-2010 which was adopted by the Board of Directors. Highlights of the budget include $20,570 projected for charitable grants and scholarships and a $19,000 administrative budget, which includes international dues and dinner costs.
From Lion President Rick
Fellow Lions,
I am proud of our reputation in the community, and the willing spirit of
our members. But to continue, we need to bring in new members, and continue the
diversity of our membership. If you have a friend or neighbor who you have
thought about inviting to join us. Ask them to our monthly dinner meeting. I also want to congratulate Richard Halladay as the District 25 E-1 District Governor Elect, and Bill Dougherty as our Speech & Hearing District Trustee. They exemplify the quality of our members, and the support we provide to our community and district. See you at the Parade! -Lion President Rick |
