Dinner meeting program to feature two Lions projects

The April dinner meeting will be a double feature of Lions projects. Past DG Linda Tichner will speak on the Lions Law Camp, and Lion Richard Lambert will discuss Lions hearing dogs. Lion Richard will be bringing members of his club on an official club visit, so let’s have a big showing for the meeting, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Parkview Nazarene Church!

Highway clean-up April 19

Lion Gerhard Weber will lead a Lion highway clean-up crew on April 19, as part of INDOT’s “Trash Bash” program. Please note this is before the next dinner meeting, so don’t wait to sign up there.

The crew will meet at McDonald’s for breakfast at 8 a.m. before hitting the road. Just join the group there and bring your work gloves.

State Convention April 22-25

Lion President Bob Gilmore will be leading our delegation to the State Convention in South Bend April 22-25. We are entitled to 10 voting delegates. If you want to be one of them, please contact Lion Bob.

Riverwatch water monitoring May 3

Lion Dave Miller will be conducting a water testing session on May 3 at 6:00 p.m. on Salt Creek at Deer Run Park. He’ll be assisted by his Cub Scout Pack, who love to get in the creek and kick up the bugs! Come join the fun and watch the enthusiastic little guys count creepy-crawlies and generally have good old-fashioned fun.

Quiz Bowl coming up May 7

The Lions will sponsor at least one team in this year’s Literacy Coalition Quiz Bowl, which will be on May 7 at the Brown County Library. Expected team members are Larry Gardner, Brian Teel and Dave Woerner, but there is always room for more! Contact Lion President Bob to volunteer to show your stuff!

Two new Lions added

Sidney and Smokey Presseau have joined our club as new members. Smokey is our County Highway Superintendent and Sidney works in the Visitor’s Center. Lion Jerry Simo sponsors both of them. Please welcome them to our club!

Plan to partake of pancakes on May 22

Lion Julia Voland announced the plans for the Spring Pancake Breakfast, which will be May 22 at the Brown County Fairgrounds.

Tickets for the Spring Breakfast will be available at the next dinner meeting. Tickets will be $5 in advance and $6 at the door. Please plan on picking up a book of five to sell (or use yourself)!

Julia plans to walk the Spring Blossom Parade route handing out $1 off door coupons to promote the breakfast, reducing the $6 at-the-door price to the $5 advance sale price.  She’d like some help, if you’re willing to walk the route. Pretty slick marketing, Julia!

To sign up for your favorite volunteer post, contact Julia quickly!

Spring Blossom Parade needs you

Lion Gene Niednagel is looking for 6-8 more Lions to staff posts along the parade route. If you’re available, please contact Lion Gene.

With only 35 units signed up for the Spring Blossom Parade, the parade committee is working hard to fill the field. Applications for floats continue to be available at the Lions website, www.browncountylions.org. The deadline for entries is April 15.

This year, the parade will be held on May 1, 2010, with the theme “Community Spirit Thrives in Brown County.”

Lion Earl Eversol is overhauling the Lions Mini-Model-T car for the parade. He’s found trouble with the transmission. If you’re handy with motors, contact Lion Earl and offer a hand.

Scholarship winners TBA soon

Lion Gene Niednagel says that the five high school winners of Lions scholarships will be announced at the BCHS awards program in early May. The winners will be invited to visit our club at the May meeting, so plan on attending to congratulate these fine young scholars.

Lions to screen eyes at health fair

Lions will be providing free eye screening at the Health and Parenting Fair at the YMCA on April 16, 2010. Drop by and see Lions in action at this fun event.

Adopt-a-River adopted by returning environmentalist

Lion Joyce Jordan-Peek has agreed to take over the Adopt-a-River program. Lion Joyce has been very interested in protecting our environment and is a great leader for this project. Welcome back, Joyce!

Playhouse to start season soon

Lion Jerry Simo announced that the Playhouse will open soon, and we’ll begin our 60+ year of slinging popcorn and Cokes. Lion Ernie Austin will captain the first play, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, beginning June 10. Contact Lion Ernie before he calls you!

Captainships for the other three plays are still available. If you’re willing to serve, contact Lion Jerry.

Fireworks plans underway

Lion Jerry Simo is busy putting together the Family Fun plans for pre-fireworks activities. McDonald’s and ABATE are newly-recruited sponsors of fun activities from 7-9 p.m. on July 3, 2010.

Pride2 ABC back to work

After a winter off, the street walkers of Pride2 ABC are back to work, sweeping butts off the street. In March, they had already logged over 20 hours. Good work, Lion John Davis and crew!

IBEW decides to drive itself

Last month, it was reported that we were negotiating with the IBEW to provide van drivers for their get-together this summer at Bill Monroe’s. Those talks have stalled, and it looks like the electricians will be chauffeurs for their event. Thanks to Lion Jerry for working to bring this fundraising opportunity to us.
