District Convention Elects Brown County Lion Richard Halladay Vice District Governor The Brown County Lions haven’t produced a district governor since the 1970s, but that is history now. On April 5, 2008, District 25E-1 unanimously elected Brown County Past President Richard Halladay to the post of Vice District Governor, which puts him in line to be District Governor next year. Lion Richard said that he sought the office because of the great experience he’s had with our Brown County club. “It goes back to the motto, ‘We Serve.’ I want to promote the concept of Lionism we have to other clubs.” Lion Richard previously served as our club President, Treasurer, and is currently our eye screening chair. He served as Zone Chair, Region Chair, and chair of membership of the district M.E.R.L. team. Lion Richard is a retired minister with the Episcopal Church, though he still stands in the pulpit for vacationing clergy around southern Indiana. He and his wife, Jan, have six grown children, 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Lion Leaders Slated; Treasurer Still Needed While the Democratic nomination for U.S. President is still up in the air, the Nominating Committee of the Brown County Lions Club reported at the April board meeting that it had an almost full slate of candidates for office. However, the very important position of Treasurer remains unfilled. Lion Leaders for 2008-2009 will be:
President:
Richard Dean If you would be willing to serve as Treasurer, please contact Lion Dana Roberts.
Circus News In case you haven’t heard, the Kelly Miller Circus is coming to town on May 2 for shows at 4:30 and 8:00 p.m. at Eagle Creek Park (next to the North state park entrance). Every child in the Brown County elementary schools will attend the tent-raising at 9 a.m., May 2, and will be invited to participate in a coloring contest as a promotion for the event. Ticket sales are slow so far, so make sure you’re out hawking those tickets. Remember, we get ½ of the profit for pre-sale tickets, but only 10% day of show. If you took tickets to sell, make sure you bring your money and leftover tickets to the April meeting. We will sell tickets at the IGA every weekend until April 27. If you’re interested in manning the booth, please contact Lion Jack Rothaar. On May 1, the Club will host a pre-circus dinner at Mike’s Dance Barn with the circus advance man. Come for a good BBQ rib dinner, circus stories and plain old fun. Tickets are $10, paid in advance from Lion Bob Gilmore. Dinner starts at 6:30.
New Lions invited to carry flag in parade Newer Lions are encouraged to help carry the battleship flag that traditionally brings up the rear of the Spring Blossom Parade. All Lions are invited, of course. The parade steps off at 11 a.m. on May 3. Marshals and judges are in place as “Brown County Celebrates its Youth.” Fifty-three Lions have volunteered to help as judges and marshals. Call Alan Hazelbaker to be 54!

Environmental Tip of the Month Replacing commercial household cleaners in your home with a bottle of vinegar and water, baking soda, or other homemade concoction reduces your potential exposure to toxic chemicals and saves energy that would have been used in the manufacturing process. If every American household replaced one big-brand bottle with the homemade stuff, it would save millions of barrels of petroleum.
Brown County Lions at 65: History of the Club, Part 2 In the 65 years since formation of the Lions Club of Brown County, the Lions have become a major factor to lend a hand to community projects - from the volunteer Nashville Fire Department to the town's first public water system. Last year, for example, the club's profits from publicly-supported charitable projects resulted in grants to the community of $18,766.50. Large as it
is, Lion Treasurer and Finance Chair John McKune reported that figure actually
is less than the previous year when the grants totaled $21,480. In addition to $7,000 in recently added educational awards annually, grants include Lion projects such as vision care and Sheriff Buck Stogsdill's smoke detectors for Triad caretakers, diabetes test strips for the Health Support Clinic, and $500 each for additional at gear at the Hamblen and Jackson townships' volunteer fire departments. Other Lions Club grants provided $1,000 each to Habitat for Humanity for a 12th house and to the Mother's Cupboard program to address hunger. Another $600 went to the Turning Point shelter for victims of domestic violence, and $500 to the Humane Society to a replace fire door.
