wanted to expand horizons beyond daily work activities for the betterment of local
communities and the world at large. By 1920, the Lions clubs had become
international. Today, 44,909 clubs in 186 countries have nearly 1.5 million members.
Eyesight became a prime national Lions Club mission after a challenge from the
unsighted, deaf celebrity, Helen Keller, for Lions to be the "Knights of Sight."
Lions aid Leader Dog programs, recycle eyeglasses, and provide free eye care to
needy children everywhere.
